We acknowledge that the City of Welland is located on the traditional lands of the Attiwonderonk (Neutral) People, and is part of the broader traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Anishinaabe Peoples, who have stewarded these lands, waterways, and natural resources since time immemorial.

This region is governed by the principles of the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between Indigenous nations to share and protect the lands surrounding the Great Lakes in a spirit of peace, friendship, and mutual responsibility. The covenant reminds all who live here of the shared obligation to care for the land and ensure its resources remain available for future generations.

The Niagara region has long been an important area for trade, travel, agriculture, and connection due to its proximity to the Welland Canal, the Niagara River, and the Great Lakes watershed. Long before municipal boundaries or colonial infrastructure were established, Indigenous communities used these waterways as vital transportation and trade routes.

As public servants and community leaders, we recognize that acknowledging this history is only one step. We remain committed to listening, learning, and supporting meaningful reconciliation through equitable policy, inclusive community engagement, and respect for Indigenous voices, knowledge, and leadership.
